Swanson was a distinguished anthropologist who served as a professor for the Department of Anthropology, Idaho State University and Director for the museum at Idaho State University. He also taught at the Institute of Archeology, London, England. He conducted extensive studies into the archaeology of Idaho and the Great Basin and was consider an expert in archaeology of southeastern Idaho. This type was named in his studies into the archeology of Birch Valley Idaho and has several professional references during the 1980's. References to this type has diminished since that time.

Description of Physical Characteristics and Flaking Pattern:
This is a narrow medium ovoid to lanceolate point with an elliptical to plano convex cross section. The blade is excurvate, curving in at the tip and becoming almost parallel (Type A) and curving back in towards the base (Type B). The base ranges from straight to slightly concave (Type A) to convex with rounded basal corners (Type B). This point has a random flaking pattern.

Granger and Ireland (1986), note that this type rarely appears in literature. Butler first uses this name, and illustrates them, for examples found on the mouth of the Portneuf River, but does do describe the type. Swanson, King and Chatters names and describes Type A and Type B. They also mention a Type C, but does not describe or illustrates this type. The full distribution on this type is not mentioned by Swanson or Butler.

This point is primarily found in central to southeastern Idaho and into the surrounding region of Utah, Wyoming, and Montana. This point has been found as far west as Long Valley Idaho.
