Woodbury was a prominent Anthropologist who was a professor at many prestigious universities and was instrumental in the formation and served as Chair of the Anthropology Department at U Mass Amherst. This point was fist identified in his Master’s Thesis. Justice formalized this type in his book on the Great Basin.

Description of Physical Characteristics and Flaking Pattern:
This is a small triangular point with a flattened to elliptical cross section. The blade is primarily straight. Parallel U-shaped notches enter the blade forming a horizontal shoulder and an expanded stem. The base may vary from straight to concave and has a center notch in the basal edge. This point has a random flaking pattern.

Total Length - 14 to 35 mm, Stem Length - 8 to 11 mm, Neck Width - 6 to 11 mm, Max Width (basal width) - 11 to 22 mm, Thickness - 3 to 4 mm

Woodbury referred to these points as Awatovi Variety of side notch points. Noel Justice formalized the Awatovi Side Notch name separating the type from other similar points and identifying them as a separate unique type (Justice, 2001)

This point is found from the Gunnison River valley on Colorado to the Rio Grande River Valley through out Arizona into southeastern California and into the Colorado River Valley in Utah. Distribution extends into Northern Chihuahua and northeastern Sonora, Mexico
