Agee Corner Notch
Cluster: Alba Cluster
Description of Physical Characteristics and Flaking Pattern:
This is a thin small to medium corner notched point with a flattened cross section.  The blade is primarily recurvate, but may be straight on some, especially smaller, examples.  Many examples have a excurvate tip with parallel sides and flaring out at the shoulders edge.  Deep notches enter the blade at a 45 degree and from the base and generally form a U or V shape.  The shoulder are barbed with terminations that may range from square to rounded or pointed.  The stem is expanding with a convex base with a fan or bulbous appearance.  The base rarely has multiple notches.  This point is made using carefully controlled pressure flaking with flaking patterns that may range from oblique flaking more commonly seen on larger examples to random flaking more common on smaller examples.  This point has a high quality of workmanship.
Size Measurements:

Total Length - 13 to 55 mm (average 25 to 35 mm),  Stem Length - 5 to 8 mm,  Blade Width at Shoulders - 10 to 25 mm (average 15 mm),  Neck Width - 5 to 8 mm,  Stem Width - 8 to 15 mm,  Thickness - 2 to 4 mm

Additional Comments:

This point is similar to the Homan point, but may be distinguished by the flat tipped barb commonly seen on the Agee point (Turner and Hester, 1985).

Davis (1995) feels that this may represent a ceremonial point due to being found in caches associated with burials.  Davis believes that Agee and Homan points may be part of a continuum being very similar in general appearance.

James A. Brown (1976) states that this may represent "A socio-technic point of the Spiro phase and earlier.” , describing specimens as socio-technic points of the late Coles Creek culture also made for non-utilitarian use.
