Description of Physical Characteristics:

Color:  Woodford Chert ranges in color from a light gray to a light olive gray or black.  Lighter variations do occur ranging from a pale yellow to a tan.  May range from stripped to mottled and opaque to translucent.  Iron pyrite inclusions may be present.

Woodford Chert is associated with the Woodford Formation of Oklahoma.  Primary outcroppings occur in the western Ouachita Mountains from Gaines Creek to the South Canadian River near Eufaula, Oklahoma.  Primarily found as outcroppings in the mountains and as  cobble in creek beds.
