Description of Physical Characteristics:

Color:  Wassataquoik Chert ranges from a medium or dark gray to greenish gray or black.  Red jasper also occurs in this formation.

Texture: 
Fine grain

Luster:  Waxy

Translucency:  Opaque

Silica Fabrics / Fossils: 

Patina:  Patina is whitish with iron oxide staining commonly present.

Heat Treatment:

Wassataquoik Chert is associated with the Wassataquoik Chert Formation of Maine occurs as beds on the banks of East Branch of the Penobscot River and the Wassataquoik Stream near the confluence.  Also occurs near the Lower Shin Pond, Lunksoos Lake, northeast of Millinocket Lake, and east of Katahdin Lake in Penobscot County, Maine.
