Description of Physical Characteristics:

Color: Warsaw Chert is opaque and ranges from a pale tan or brownish gray to a medium brown,  White streaking is commonly present along with white fossil remnants A variation is a higher quality chert ranging from a homogenous bluish white to a very pale gray 

Texture:
Fine grain

Luster: Glossy

Silica Fabrics / Fossils: Sponge spicule

Patina:

Heat Treatment:  Heat treatment produces pinkish hues, blue hues, or a smoky medium bluish gray color.  The higher quality homogenous chert has greater opacity and turns white.  Fossil fragments turn red.
