Description of Physical Characteristics:

Color: Tiger Chert is primarily dark brown with wide tan banding.  If the material is smaller, the tan could be primary with the darker brown bands.

Texture:
Fine grain

Luster: Dull

Translucency:  Opaque

Heat Treatment:  Heat treatment increases the color and luster.  Heat treatment was commonly used to make it easier to remove the limestone cortex.

Tiger Chert is associated with the Bridger Formation and is primarily found as nodules in the Bridger Basin of Wyoming and into the Uinta Mountain range of southwestern Wyoming and northeastern Utah.  It has been found into northwestern Colorado.  It is part of the Pine Springs assemblage.  Primary outcroppings occur in Pine Mountain, Sage Mountain, and Cedar Mountain northwest of Lone Tree, Wyoming.
