Description of Physical Characteristics:

Color:  Suwannee Chert ranges from brown to a creamy tan with dark gray, black, and bluish white also occurring.  Clear chalcedony and mottling commonly occurs, banding may also occur.  Jasper also occurs.

Medium to fine grain

Luster:  Soft dull luster

Silica Fabrics / Fossils: Fossiliferous

Patina: 

Heat Treatment:  Heat treatment produces colors of yellow and dark red and increases the luster to glossy

Suwannee Chert  is associated with the Suwannee Limestone Formation, Vicksburg Group of Georgia and Florida.  Primarily occurs as nodules and blocks with quarries in Marianna and Wrights Creek, Florida. Also outcrops along the Savannah River and along ridge tops.
