Description of Physical Characteristics:

Color:  Spring Branch Chert is primarily a medium light gray to a medium dark gray chert with darker fossil inclusions.  May range to a light brownish gray.  Other varieties may range from a dark brownish gray to a black with yellowish brown mottling..  Bluish gray chalcedony vugs may be present.

Texture: 
Medium to medium fine grain

Luster: Dull to satin or opaque

Silica Fabrics / Fossils: Fusulinids, brayozoan, calcarious algae

Patina:

Heat Treatment:  Heat treatment gives a slight reddish gray color change and improves luster.
