Color:  Silurian Chert is a mottled or streaked chert ranging in color from white to a light cream or light gray

Texture:
Course to medium grain

Luster: Chalky to dull

Silica Fabrics / Fossils: Highly fossiliferous; crinoids and corals.

Patina:

Heat Treatment:  Heat treatment produces red hues, increases the luster, and flaking quality.

Silurain Chert is associated with the Mayville Limestone / Dolomite Formation of the Alexandrian Series of Missouri and Illinois.  Outcroppings occur along the Niagara Peninsula in eastern Wisconsin and along the Michigan Peninsula.
