Ste. Genevieve Chert
AKA: Old Blue Chert (Illinois)
Description of Physical Characteristics:
Color: Ste.
Genevieve Chert ranges from light to medium blue, gray, and black, to
olive gray and yellowish gray. Light to dark gray concentric bands are
common. Bluish chalcedony inclusions may
be present.
Texture: Medium to fine grain
Luster: Waxy to glossy

Notes: Nodular Ste. Genevieve chert is smooth, commonly has faint
concentric bands, and contains no fossil inclusions; bedded Ste.
Genevieve chert may be grainy and contain fossils.

Ste. Genevieve Chert is associated with the Ste. Genevieve formation of
Illinois, Missouri and
Kentucky. It has primary sources within the Mississippi River
bluffs. Found throughout the southern Illinois Basin.
