Description of Physical Characteristics:

Color:  Red Deer Siltstone ranges from a dark red to tan color with white macrofossil inclusions.

Texture:
Fine to medium grain

Luster: Dull to waxy

Translucency: Opaque

Silica Fabrics / Fossils: Fossil plant and gastropods

Patina: Black

Heat Treatment: Heat treatment produced red tints, turns the fossils white, and increases the luster.

Red Deer Siltstone is associated with the Paskapoo Formation of southern and central Alberta.  Primary outcroppings occur at the confluence of the Red Deer River and the Blindman River and throughout the Eastern Slopes of Alberta.  This is considered a local material.
