Description of Physical Characteristics:
Color: Pipe
Creek Chert ranges in color from gray to bluish gray or a pale brown.
May be mottled or homogenous. May have light blue cloudy or darker
gray colorations and quartz lined vugs may be present.
Texture: Medium to fine grain
Luster: Satin to vitreous
Silica Fabrics / Fossils: Brachiopods and
echinoderms
Patina: The patina is a yellowish green
Heat Treatment: Heat treatment produces
a red or brown coloration.

Pipe Creek Chert is associated with the Middle Devonian Tenmile Creek
Formation from Fulton and Lucas counties, Ohio. Primary sources in Erie County, Ohio and into
Indiana and Michigan.

Archaeological Context:
Pipe Creek Chert was extensively used during the
Archaic period in northwestern Ohio. Artifacts from this material has
been reported into central Ohio.
