Color:  Mogothy Quartzite ranges in color from gray to bluish gray or purpleCommonly there are distinctive banding in an opaline cemented quartz sand.  Small fossils may give the material a peppered appearance.

Mogothy Quartzite is associated with the Mogothy Formation of Maryland and into Pennsylvania, Delaware, and New Jersey.  Primarily occurs as beds near Pasadena, Anne Arundel County, Maryland, the mouth of Rock Creek, the south side of Patapsco River (White Rocks), offshore of Rocky Point at the mouth of Back River in Baltimore County, Maryland, and at the mouth of Stoney Creek in Anne Arundel County, Maryland.
