Description of Physical Characteristics:

Color: Cattail Chert can range from translucent to opaque with colors ranging from white to black.  The most common colors range from a light tan to brown and gray to blue with a mottled creamy gray-blue being the most common.

Texture: 
The texture can range from a course grainy quartzite like to a finer smooth chalcedony like texture.

Luster: Dull to glossy

Translucency:  Opaque to semi translucent

Silica Fabrics / Fossils: Carbonaceous matter and pyrite primarily with rutile needles,. apatite, iron oxide gels, and sponge spicules also occurring.

Patina: Patina ranges from a light o medium gray or blue.
