Description of Physical Characteristics:

Color:  Lisbon Chert ranges from red to yellow or cream to blue.  Mottling or striping may be present.  Jasper and chalcedony also occur in this formation.

Fine grain

Luster: Vitreous

Translucency:

Silica Fabrics / Fossils:  Highly fossiliferous

Patina: 

Heat Treatment: Heat treatment produces colors of bright pink, dark res, and bright orange, increases the luster to glossy and chalky white spots due to the presence of fossils.

Lisbon Chert is associated with the Lisbon Limestone Formation of the Clairbourn Group of Georgia. The McBean Formation name is used in central and eastern Georgia, named for exposures along McBean Creek, Richmond County, Georgia.  Liston Formation is used for exposures in western Georgia. Primarily occurs as nodules or large boulders.
