Description of Physical Characteristics:
Color: Knife
River Flint ranges in color from a root beer, tea, coffee, or caramel
brown
Texture: Fine grain
Luster: Dull to glossy
Translucency: Moderate to highly translucent
Silica Fabrics / Fossils:
Patina: Has a yellowish white or white patina
Heat Treatment: Heat treatment increases
the color turning it into a very dark brown or very dark gray.

Distribution Comments:
Knife River Flint is associated with the
Eocene Golden Valley Formation and is primarily found in
cobbles in Dunn and Mercer county, North Dakota. It can be found
through Southwestern North Dakota and into Montana and South Dakota.
Can be found in glacial til as far east as central Iowa.
