Joana Chert is associated with the Joana Formation of Nevada.  Outcroppings occur in the Diamond and Pancake ranges as nodules, Ruby Mountains as dark gray to black nodules, Buck Mountain and Bald Mountain as nodules, northern Reveille Range, Grant and White Pine Ranges as reddish brown lenses, southern Cherry Creek and northern Egan Ranges as light brown to reddish brown nodules, northern and southern Schell Creek Range as light brown to brown or dark gray to black nodules or stringers, western Red Hills as purplish black nodules, Kern Mountains as abundant black nodules, Spruce Mountain as dark gray and black nodules and stringers, northern Pahroc Range, Golden Gate Range, Seaman Range, and Dutch John Mountains, Nevada.
