Hozomeen Chert

Description of Physical Characteristics:

Color: Hozomeen Chert occurs most commonly as banded, mottled, or crisscross with white quartz veins but solid colors do occur.  Colors range from dark gray to black, light gray to light bluish-gray or medium gray, pink, red, pale green, and white.

Texture:
 Course to fine grain

Luster: Dull (course gain) to glossy (fine grain)

Translucency: Opaque to slightly translucent

Heat Treatment:

Hozomeen Chert is associated with the Hozomeen Series of southern British Columbia and north central Washington.  Primary outcroppins occur around Mount Hozomeen, Washington.  Hozomeen Chert also occurs as glacial till far beyond the Cascades.
