Description of Physical Characteristics:

Color:  Hixton Silicified Sandstone may range in color from white to tan (most common), but may vary from red to orange, lavender to brown, or yellows.

Texture: 
Fine grain

Luster:

Silica Fabrics / Fossils: Chalcedony and opal cement.

Patina:

Heat Treatment:  Heat treatment degrades the chalcedony and opal that cement the material.  This causes the material to become brittle and makes the material unworkable.  However, heat treatment does darken the color at low temperatures at or below 245 degrees..
