Grassy Knob Chert overlays the Bailey Limestone formation of Indiana, Illinois, and into Kentucky.  Primary outcroppings are found on the west side of Grassy Knob, Jackson County and along the Mississippi River bluffs in Jackson and Union counties, Illinois.
