Description of Physical Characteristics:

Color: Gerster Chert ranges from a tan to a light gray or light bluish gray with a dark rusty brown cortex. Banding was reported in exposures in the southern Pequop Mountains.

Gerster Chert is associated with the Gerster Limestone Formation of northwestern Utah.  Primarily occurs as beds and nodules on Thumb Ridge, Finger Ridge, and the Hogup Mountains, Tooele County, Utah.  Gerster exposures have been reported in the western Deep Creek Range, Butte Mountains, Pequop Mountains, Northern Cherry Creek Range, Medicine Range, and Phalen Butte north of Currie in Nevada.
