Color:  Brush Creek chert varies in color from a tan to a brown olive or light green.

Texture: 
Medium to fine grain

Luster:  Dull

Translucency:  Opaque

Silica Fabrics / Fossils: Sponge spicules, brachiopod, echinoderm

Patina: Reddish brown

Heat Treatment:  Heat treatment increases the color and luster

Brush Creek Chert is associated with the Brush Creek Limestone Formation of the Conemaugh Group. Primary sources along Brush Creek in Adams County, Ohio and Butler County, Pennsylvania.  Other outcroppings are reported in Athens, Lawrence, and Fayette counties, Ohio, northern West Virginia, Fayette County, Pennsylvania, and eastern Kentucky.  Also found along the South Fork of the Hughes River, Roane and Calhoun counties, West Virginia.
