Description of Physical Characteristics:

Color:  Beaver River Silicified Sandstone is slightly mottled ranging in color from brown to orange and light to medium gray.

Texture: 
Course to fine grain

Luster: Dull to waxy

Translucency: Moderate to highly translucent

Silica Fabrics / Fossils: Absent

Patina:

Heat Treatment:  Heat treatment increases the flaking quality and increases the luster to waxy to vitreous.  Orange and reddish hues are produce.

Distribution:
Beaver River Silicified Sandstone has primary outcroppings at Quarry of the Ancestors near Fort MacKay in northeastern Alberta and along the west side of the Athabasca River near Mildred Lake and the Beaver River.  This is a local material.
